Previous Raiders Quarterbacks

Previous Raiders Quarterbacks

So, there I was, a few years back, at a Raiders game, and I'm standing there, beer in hand, watching Derek Carr drop back, and I think to myself, "Man, this guy's got some big shoes to fill." I mean, we're talking about a franchise that's seen its fair share of quarterbacks, some legendary, some... well, let's just say they've had their moments.

Derek Carr: The Current Guy

Speaking of Derek, he's been our guy since 2014. You know, the first quarterback taken in the draft that year. He's had his ups and downs, but hey, that's football, right? He's thrown for over 35,000 yards with us, which is pretty impressive. But let's not forget, he's got some tough competition when it comes to the Raiders' quarterback history.

Rich Gannon: The Comeback Kid

Remember Rich Gannon? He was our guy in the late 90s and early 2000s. He led us to our last Super Bowl appearance in 2002. That guy was a comeback king. I mean, he'd be down 20 points in the fourth quarter, and you'd think, "Well, that's it," but no, not Gannon. He'd lead us right back into the game. He's still the only Raider to win an MVP award, you know.

Ken Stabler: The Snake

And then there's Ken Stabler. The Snake. He won us our first Super Bowl in 1976. He was a gunslinger, always taking risks, always keeping us on the edge of our seats. He's still the franchise leader in passing yards and touchdowns. He was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2016, and rightfully so. I mean, come on, the guy had a 92.5 passer rating in the playoffs. That's Snake magic right there.

Jim Plunkett: The Underdog

Jim Plunkett, another Super Bowl winner with us. He was the ultimate underdog story. Drafted first overall, but then he had to sit behind Stabler for a few years. But when his time came, he delivered. He led us to that Super Bowl win in 1983. He's another one in the Hall of Fame, and for good reason.

And Then There Were Others...

We've had some other notable quarterbacks too. Like Carson Palmer, who led us to a few playoff appearances. And then there was JaMarcus Russell. Ah, JaMarcus. I still remember the hype around him when he was drafted first overall in 2007. But, well, let's just say he didn't quite live up to the expectations. He's a reminder that even with a high draft pick, anything can happen in the NFL.

So, there you have it. A little walk down memory lane with some of our past quarterbacks. It's a tough job, being a Raider quarterback. You've got some big shoes to fill, and a lot of history to live up to. But hey, that's what makes it exciting, right? Here's to hoping Derek Carr can keep adding his name to that list of legendary Raiders quarterbacks.
