The term 'smoke' was used back in the day to describe the thick, dark clouds of smoke that hung over the city, thanks to all the coal-fired industries and homes. And 'big'? Well, that's just London being, well, big.

• Londinium: The ancient Roman name for the city. It's a bit of a mouthful, but it's got history on its side.
• The Square Mile: This one's for the city's financial district. It's a bit more formal, but it's still got a certain charm.
