Have Arsenal Always Been In North London

Have Arsenal Always Been In North London

So, I was down at the local pub the other day, right? And this bloke, clearly a die-hard Arsenal fan, was going on about how the Gunners have always been in North London. I mean, he was practically ready to take on the whole Premier League in a debate over it. Now, I've always been a bit curious about this myself, so I thought, why not dive into the history books and see if we can't settle this once and for all?

Back in the Day

Let's rewind back to 1886, when it all began. A group of workers from the Royal Arsenal factory in Woolwich decided to form a football club. They called themselves Royal Arsenal, and they were playing their games in, you guessed it, South London. Now, I know what you're thinking, "But how did they end up in North London?" Well, buckle up, because it's not as simple as a quick tube ride.

From South to North

Fast forward to 1913, and Royal Arsenal had become Woolwich Arsenal. They were struggling, both on and off the pitch. The First World War didn't help matters, and by 1915, they were in serious financial trouble. That's when a certain Sir Henry Norris came along. He was a local businessman and MP, and he saw the potential in the club. But he also saw the potential in moving them to a more profitable location.

Enter Highbury, a stadium in, you guessed it again, North London. Norris snapped it up, and in 1913, Woolwich Arsenal became the first club to play in two different parts of London. But they weren't done moving around just yet. In 1919, they dropped the 'Woolwich' and became simply Arsenal.

But Why North London?

You might be wondering why Norris chose North London for the club's new home. Well, it was all about the money, really. Highbury was closer to the city centre, which meant more fans, more revenue. Plus, the Southern Railway had a station right next to the ground, making it easier for fans to get to the games. It was a win-win, or so Norris thought.

But here's where it gets interesting. Norris had a bit of a reputation, shall we say. He was accused of bribing players and officials to help Arsenal win the First Division in 1919. The Football League investigated, and while they couldn't prove anything, the scandal tarnished Arsenal's reputation. Some even say that's why Arsenal never won the league again until 1931 - but that's a story for another time.

So, Have They Always Been in North London?

Alright, let's get back to the original question. Have Arsenal always been in North London? Well, technically, no. They started life in South London, and it wasn't until 1913 that they made the move north. But they've been there ever since, and let's face it, they're as much a part of North London as the Emirates Stadium is. So, while they might not have always been there, they've certainly made the most of their time in the north.

And there you have it, folks. The next time someone tries to tell you that Arsenal have always been in North London, you can give them a little history lesson. Just don't mention the Norris scandal, unless you want to start a whole other debate. Cheers!
